The planned drill was announced yesterday by the IRGC’s Navy commander Rear Admiral Morteza Saffari. “The sensitive conditions of the Middle East region have multiplied the need for us to be ready to defend the country,” Saffari said.

RAdm Saffari added that different units of the IRGC’s navy would participate in the exercise to test new tactics and weapons in real life scenarios.

A few months ago I was reading a book about permaculture called, “Gaia’s Garden”, and came across a section in it covering wild edibles. I’ve been gardening since I was a teenager so I was excited to find out that some wild plants (also known as weeds) are edible. Having lived in Florida all my life gardening can be challenging here, especially when insects come in and ravage the crops.

After reading the brief section on wild edibles I decided to order a book called, “Forager’s Harvest”. The book is very well written and profiles over 50 wild edible plants throughout North America. There’s also a section in the back which gives excellent examples on how to identify plants by their leaves, stems and other parts.

I decided to educate myself more after reading the book so I searched for videos on YouTube covering wild edibles. The best ones I came across were from a channel called, “Eat The Weeds”, which is operated by Deane Jordan.

“I started teaching wild edibles because I wanted to make pollution personal. It’s one thing to tell people the environment is polluted, it’s another to show them a tree full of fruit they cannot eat because it’s too close to the Interstate.” Jordan said Sunday in an e-mail exchange with me.

I was delighted to find that Jordan’s channel has 105 videos, 101 of which profile different wild edibles. His other videos show how to make cider and vinegar, build a solar oven, and how to eat mole crabs and coquina.

While many of the plants Jordan profiles are native to Florida most can be found across North America. Jordan also has a website called eattheweeds.com where he gives a thorough write up about each plant he’s profiled in his videos.

“Foraging does more than put food on the table. It makes a person not only more aware of their surroundings but nature then becomes a resource rather than something to be controlled or eliminated,” Jordan added

Thanks to Jordan’s videos I’ve been able to properly identify three plants in my area. They are Creeping cucumber, Stinging nettle and Purslane, I’ve tasted all of these and have recommended them to my friends.

For thousands of years humans have been eating wild edibles and it’s very likely that they’ll become popular again given the state of our rapidly deteriorating economy.

The AK-47 is one of the most popular and easily recognized firearms in the world. Over 50 armies along with hundreds of resistance movements use the weapon. There have been over 50,000,000 AKs produced since the rifle’s creation in 1947.

The main reason for the weapon’s popularity is its dependability in combat. It also delivers a more destructive round than that of its chief rival the M-16. The M-16 and its variant the M-4 shoot a 5.56x45mm(.223) round. The AK-47 fires a 7.62x39mm round.

The AK-47 has an effective range of 300 meters, its accuracy can be increased by adding a scope.

There are many variants to the assault rifle which include the MAK-90, RPK, AKM, AKK, and the AK 74, which fires a .223 round, the same fired by the M-16. An increasingly popular variant is the Saiga-308 which fires a 7.62x51mm(.308) round.

Another feature of the rifle is that it has high capacity magazines. They come in 5, 10, 20, 30, and 45 round capacities. There’s even a 75 round drum available for the rifle.

Up until the recent presidential election AKs could be bought for under $500. They can still be bought for that price but it’s much more difficult to find one for under $500. To get a good quality rifle now you’d be looking at close to $700 or more. Some of the places you may choose to shop are gun shows, gun shops and pawn shops. You may also want to browse your local classified ads to see if anyone is selling a rifle.

Ammunition for the rifle was widely available up until a few months ago. Some online ammo retailers include jgsales.com, cheaperthandirt.com, and sportsmansguide.com. Be sure to buy non-corrosive rounds when purchasing ammo. The above mentioned retailers also provide accessories for the rifle including scopes, slings and sight adjustment tools.

For those who find the AK-47 beyond their budget there is another assault rifle called the SKS which fires the same round as the AK. The SKS has some drawbacks compared to the AK, but overall it’s a great weapon. You may also want to consider taking a look at the Mosin-Nagant rifle, these rifles can be picked up for as little as $120 in good condition.

The key to finding good deals on rifles and ammunition is to shop around and compare quality and price among sellers.

Our Florida Chapter is looking into the feasibility of holding a meeting for our members throughout the Southeast. We have a considerable number of members and supporters in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas and we would like to meet you in person and give you some ideas on how to become more politically active. At the meeting we’ll give a review of past activism in our region, and we’ll tell you about our media projects and our recent successes using Youtube and other video hosting sites to get our message out to the public.

Other topics we’ll discuss will be my last campaign for Florida representative and how we can use political campaigns to generate publicity for our organization. I’ll also be speaking about ways to get involved with your local political committees. The meeting will be conducted by Todd Weingart, our Florida Chapter coordinator and myself. The meeting will be open to non-members as well as members.
